Eucharist

Eucharist

The reception of the Eucharist (Communion) is the culmination and completion of the Sacraments of Initiation.  Catholics believe that the Body and Blood of Christ received in communion is the heavenly food that Christ gave us at His last supper as nourishment for the spiritual being given us in baptism and strengthed in Confirmation. Catholics are encouraged to receive the Eucharist on a weekly basis to sustain the spiritual life given them so that they may remain in Christ and their baptismal giving image of Christ in them and so that their souls may not become malnourished.

First Communion

First Communion is normally celebrated annually during the Easter season for  students in the second grade. Preparation for this sacrament is held during the Sunday Parish School of Religion classes and other activities. A preparation session for parents is held annually.

Adults and older children who are baptized at the Easter Vigil receive their First Communion at the vigil. Those previously baptized in another Christian communion and received into the full communion of the Church receive first communion as part of the rite of reception celebrated at Mass.

Communion to the Home-Bound or Nursing/Assisted Care Facilities

Members of the parish family have been commissioned to bring Communion from the parish Sunday Eucharist to the home-bound or those in nursing care facilities. Communion is brought to the home-bound by the pastor or the parish deacon, on the first Friday of the month to those who request a visit. A Liturgy of the Word with the distribution of communion is held each Sunday at Trenton Village Assisted Living Home. Mass is celebrated for the residents of this facility on a basis on the second Friday of the month.
